Learn Japanese Calligraphy with an International Community of Shodoka

The COVID pandemic forced us into lockdown, but the desire for connection and self-improvement flourished. Master Shoran's ShodoXCulture virtual Shodo community brings together global-minded individuals through the pursuit of Shodo.

Monthly virtual lessons are conducted in English and Japanese, and provide support for students to practice, receive feedback, and share cultural experiences.

Join the online "ShodoXCulture" Community

Welcome! Once you become a member of our community, you will be invited to join the private Facebook group. Here, you will receive your monthly homework and share your homework for feedback. Join in on conversations about Japan and what's happening in your country.

Get your monthly Otenhon and video instructions

Each month, Shoran will provide three Otehon:
Kaisho - Standard style of brush writing
Gyosho - Semi-cursive style of brush writing
Pen - Block characters written in pen or brush-pen
Watch the videos and practice at home.

Monthly Virtual Group Lessons

The ShodoXCulture virtual lessons are 90 minutes long with time for learning, practice, and cultural discussion. Learn the meaning of the monthly “Otehon” and get live feedback on your work. During discussion time, join in on the conversation as students discuss topics of the day and share experiences from their own country. Conversations are in English and Japanese, and translated as needed.

Submit your work to get custom feedback for each of your pieces. Ask questions and get advice on improving your brushwork.

Get details for the trial lesson

Once your preferences are confirmed, Shoran will contact you with information for your free lesson. You will receive the “Otehon” for the month (writing templates) and link to the Zoom lesson.
