PLACE: Nippondaira Hotel

This project was commissioned by the Nippondaira Hotel in Shizuoka, Japan. The artwork was created on a large-scale 5m x 4m paper, which was displayed at the hotel to throughout the new years season.

The Japanese calligraphy performance was the climax of the New Years celebration. Over three days, Master Shoran lectured on Shodo technique at a traditional New Year’s Kakizome event.

Reflections

On the morning of the event, I was so moved by the view I saw from the Nippondaira Hotel. The first sunrise of the year rose above Mount Fuji, as it seemed to float over Suruga Bay. I decided to express this moment by drawing “Mount Fuji with the first sunrise” and the words “Fukuju” meaning to be happy and live a long life.

“I got goosebumps watching Master Shoran's powerful performance up close. I feel like it's going to be a great year. Thank you for the performance and guidance for the Kakizome.”
